WHAT IS DTF PRINTING?
Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing is a relatively new method of apparel decoration and custom printing that has gained popularity in recent years.
DTF printing is a derivative of the more established Direct-to-Garment (DTG) printing technology. DTG printing involves digitally printing directly onto fabric using specialized inkjet printers. DTF emerged as a variation of DTG, but instead of printing directly onto fabric, it prints onto a clear, adhesive film that can then be transferred onto textiles.
DTF printing has been used by brands big and small but most notably by Nike, Adidas, Target and more.
DIRECT-TO-FILM VS SCREEN PRINTING
- Excellent for complex full color designs with high detail and gradients
- No setup costs, ideal for small print runs
- Ideal for smaller runs and on demand printing
- Cost effective for small to medium size print runs
- Better suited for simple designs with limited colors
- Higher setup costs due to screens and color separations
- Better suited for longer print runs and less customization
- Economic for larger print runs, not small
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
DTF (Direct-to-Film) printing involves printing designs onto a special film and then transferring them onto fabric using heat and pressure.
DTF transfers work on a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, polyester, blends, leather, and more
Yes. There is a 12 piece minimum for DTF prints.
DTF transfers are quite durable. Most transfers are good for at least 50+ washes when properly applied and cared for.
High-resolution vector files (AI, EPS, SVG) or raster files (PNG, TIFF) with a transparent background are preferred.
Yes, DTF transfers include a white base layer, making them suitable for both light and dark-colored fabrics. A blocker base can also be used when decorating on tie dye or camo garments to avoid dye migration.
Garments should be turned inside out, washed in cold water, and tumble dried on low. Avoid bleach and fabric softeners.
Yes, DTF transfers have a slight hand-feel, but they are generally softer and more flexible compared to traditional vinyl.
The typical lead time for DTF orders is 7 business days AFTER both invoice and artwork approval and payment.
Pricing is generally based on the size of the transfer, the complexity of the design, and the quantity ordered.
